Yesterday we had a wonderful day celebrating dad, well morning. Dad had to work in the afternoon, but we had a great time making the time we had with him, all about him. I love to make things by hand, especially gifts, and Father’s Day was no different. The kids and I painted him a picture, and since I took pictures along the way I thought it would be a great little post to share.
This is an easy way of making kids art, art gallery worthy..or at least our version of an art gallery.
1. We bought a blank canvas from a local art store, a big giant one for high impact. I also bought vinyl repost-able letters and pasted them on to spell out ‘With All Our Hearts” {for obvious reasons}. I had initially planned to cut letters out of paper, use tacky rubber cement to stick them to the canvas but I found these letters at the store {saved me like an hour of work}
2. We picked out our acrylic paint colors and brushes.
3. Since we were painting indoors I cut open a few garbage bags and taped them to the floor, for easy clean up.
4. Hold your breathe because there is probably gonna be paint everywhere.
5. I let him paint away, he is learning how to paint ‘Up and Down’. After each color we went over it with a wide brush to smooth things out.
6. Then we peeled off the letters.
And volia, the perfect piece of art made with love by Dad’s Loves.

Awesome idea.
This is awesome and could be changed up with so many different sayings. (found on Pinterest)
That’s such a sweet idea! It looks really amazing too. I’d totally hang that in my house.
What store did you get the vinyl letters from?
I got them from Deserres a local craft store. They were in the wall sticker section.:)
You can get them at walmart !:)
Love what you did here. I did some similar craft with my little girl about a year ago, just using a different phrase. Such fun to see what these little artists come up with!
SO cute!! I like the finger painting idea!
did this…turned out great!!
What a great idea- found your blogpost via Pinterest! Great thing, that! Even for the small ones! I LIKE!
Greetings, IneS.
gorgeous.
I love this! That is so beautiful
Making this tonight, with a dog rescue themed message on it. Thanks for the great idea. I went to Michaels, and couldn’t find the repostable vinyl, so I simply bought larger alphabet stickers. Hoping I have no issues with that. ♥
They should work great!
I wish I could post a picture here of the one I did a couple days ago.. I LOVE it. I am so glad I found your pin on pinterest ♥
i just made something similar for my husband with my 18 month old. thanks for the idea!!
Where did you get the stickers? I have been to Michaels and a local art store and they don’t carry vinyl stickers or do I just use any alphabet sticker?
Hi! The letters I bought were similar to these: http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/stick-on-lett…
If you live in the states I try: Hobby Lobby, or if in Canada: Deserres will have them. Any alphabet letters will work, as long as you are able to peel them off after.
WOW! LOVE IT!!!
Beautiful! I think I’m going to try this today using painters’ tape (which I already have at home) and the kids’ names. Can’t wait to see how it works!
I came across your beautiful idea in Pinterest long time go and I finally did something similar with my kids, I posted it here: http://www.mamitalks.com/2012/05/diy-art-piece-ma… and linked to this post. Thanks so much for sharing! It’s really neat, I want to do more!!
Oh so cute!!
My two cents… I too couldn’t find vinyl letters at our craft store here in Cali. Turns out you reaaaaaaaally need vinyl. Otherwise the paint sticks and they tear apart as you peel them off. I found vinyl ones at the office supply store. Second you need thick letters. I thought I’d be cute with fancy swirly letters… No good! Big block letters … Awesome!! So we did two rounds… One with non-vinyl letters = disaster… With vinyl block letters = awesome!!!
thanks for this post!!!
This picture, which I found on where else but Pinterest, inspired my son’s father’s day gift! After reading the accompanying post – and browsing your blog, I LOVE it! You do a wonderful job!
I just made one this week and credited you on my blog (http://groundedwife.blogspot.com/2012/08/custom-quote-wall-art.html) Thanks for the inspiration!!!
how big is that canvas?
It was appx. 20" X 28" i believe.
Ok seriously beautiful! I love the idea and the outcome 🙂 It looks like something i would purchase and it’s so much better being made by little ones, and since my hubby is not a Pinterest man I will be doing this, thank you!
That was very special, I will have to try this with my kids. Thanks for sharing
It turned out beautifully! I’ll be trying this today with my two year old! Wish us luck!
thanks great article!
That is just beautiful. Did you think of it on your own?
Wow, way to go, Crabtrees!
Stunning. I am impressed.
Thank you so much for Sharing!!!! I just did this with my 2 year old son & we had a blast!! I used my cameo silhouette machine to cut out my letters & some birds sitting on a twig!! It turned out super cute!!!!
Great piece of art I would say. I’ll try to create my own and sell on our website! 😀
