Not So Basics / Kids Basics, That Aren’t Really That Basic

Not So Basics #kidsstyle #bestbasics Usually I’m pretty good at a casual intro, a light conversation starter. But when it comes to something I’ve put so much love and work into, it’s really hard not to just burst about it at the first sentence. But you know, sometimes a post just needs to start with a really loud: HEY, the little collection of NOT SO BASICS kids clothes, I designed with mini mioche launches…TODAY!!! I held back on the caps as much as possible, because I didn’t want you to feel as though I was yelling even though I’m totally yelling!

This post is full of photos but if you want to get right down to business, all SIX styles from this spring summer collection are live and ready for your kiddos to wear (only) at mini mioche.
Also for reference, mini mioche not only designs but they knit their fabric, sew their garments and wrap it all up with a whole whack of love, right here in Toronto! Plus (there is more), all their fabrics are organic — ethical, organic, made in north america, the best kids basics and also NOT SO BASICS (wink).

PS. a quick BIG thank you to my good friend from Swell Made Co for lending me her cutie pie kiddos for photos!

I Can’t Wait, So Here’s A Sneak Peek! / Not So Basics SS 2016

not so basics #kidsstyle by @heartandhabit and @minimioche The spring summer 2016 little capsule collection/collaboration I designed exclusively for mini mioche, the little lineup we affectionately named NOT SO BASICS (because it’s basic, but really not that basic) launches this week!! I’m super excited, SUPER DUPER excited!
So excited that I just couldn’t wait until the official launch on Tuesday, to show you some peeks — so consider yourself super sneak-peeked. Usually I’m really good at holding out until the day of launch (expert secret keeper over here!), maybe it’s the snow in April (yes it’s actually snowing here, but let’s not even talk about it) or most likely it’s just that I love it so darn much and cannot wait to show you!

If you want to see more sneak peeks before the launch: follow @minimioche and/or @heartandhabit on instagram.

A Little More, Not So Basics for Fall 2015

NSB fall 2015-2 Hold up, wait a minute! Yes I did just do a big post about the new fall stuff I designed in partnership with mini mioche, but guys there is more! Today we launched 3 more styles (and the last for this season from me) in our little Not So Basics line designed by heart and habit exclusively or (and with) mini mioche. This drop of not so basic, little basics is all new. Yes, duh it’s new since you’re just hearing about it now. I’m talking new as in, we have never done these styles before (not like last drop which was full of the best sellers!). I love LOVE these three cozy, little fashion basics so much — I wish they all came in my size. And of course as all mini mioche items are, every item is designed and made right here in Toronto and organic don’t forget the organic fabrics!

NSB coveralls NSB coveralls2 THE COVERALLS – Sorta like the comfy overalls, except ten times more cozy and warm. The perfect throw one item on “hurry up and get dressed we are gonna be late” outfit for those busy days (basically every day attire). Made in 100% organic french terry and it comes in 3 colours.
[King is wearing the indigo coveralls with Doc Martens + a Tuck Shop hat] [Harlow is wearing the coveralls in eggplant with leather high top Vans in black + a Tuck Shop hat]

NSB poncho hoodie NSB poncho hoodie2 THE PONCHO HOODIE – A wearable hybrid of our go to favorite lush hoodie and the poncho us moms wish we had in our closet this year. The perfect fall and winter layer, that will keep her warm and probably more stylish than you (sorry about that). Made in 100% organic french terry comes in 3 colours.
[Harlow is wearing the heather granite poncho hoodie with mini mioche midwash denim and leather high top Vans in black]

NSB the hoodie dress NSB the hoodie dress2 THE HOODIE DRESS – Finally a dress that will keep her warm, no more saying it’s too cold to wear a dress (or is that just me saying that?). Pop on the hoodie dress and she’ll be cozy, like PJ’s all day kinda cozy. Made in 100% organic french terry in 3 colours.
[Harlow is wearing the heather blush hoodie dress with mini mioche black snug pants and Hunter Chealsa Boots]

Also, ‘Living The Dream‘ ball tee has been restocked and in a heather grey this time! And you might still be able to get a cowl hoodie, comfy overalls and a drop shoulder long sleeve (basically a kiddo version of a slouchy tee) if you hurry quick!

And if you have never ordered from mm before, sign up for their newsletter and get 10% off your first order — because any % off is always a good thing.

CHOOSING OUTFITS: THE 4 YEAR OLD SAGA

her-style1 her-style2

her-style3 her-style4 It’s funny how used to things I can get, how the idea of doing something all of the time eventually just becomes “how it’s done”. Like I always realize that things “could” change or they might, but the consistency of doing the one thing becomes so common that it’s actually a little hard to think beyond it. The day Harlow started having an opinion on what she wanted to wear (which was probably about a year ago, now), when she started requesting certain things and even telling me “no, I don’t want to wear that” I was (sorta embarrassingly) shocked.

I knew it was coming, I knew it was only a matter of time. But I had gotten so used to picking out her clothes (with a little bit of her help) it basically became, how it was done. Of course I wasn’t mad, because how could you be when it’s clear she was expressing her adorable self and her growing little personality. It just threw me off. Also if I’m being honest, it was a tiny bit hard for me to adjust to her style and the fact that it wasn’t always the same as mine. Her wardrobe went from being pretty much all tomboy-esk to a much heavier mix of pink (and more pink), glitter, anything shiny, dresses and still some tomboy-esk things (she just tops everything off with something pink or glittery). As much as I was (embarrassingly) jolted (it’s the clothing designer in me!) when she started telling me what she wanted to wear I was so flipping proud to see her being confident and exerting some independence. So lately, a token hit of pink, loads of necklaces, a dress for almost everyday is just how getting dressed gets done – and I’m pretty happy (not embarrassingly) to have gotten used to ‘how it’s now done‘.

Her favorite new thing (which was also mine as a little girl) is changing her Barbies clothes, she really staring loving to change her dolls clothes around the time she started telling me, what she wanted (mostly didn’t want) to wear. She likes to try and find them outfits like the ones she has in her closet (always a hit of pink or glitter). And of course she goes for the little Barbie clothes that I would have walked right by in the store – go figure! It’s fun to watch her personality run wild and to see the crazy things she comes up with, and then reasoning behind her choices that usually manifests into a story of “who” that Barbie is or what she is doing.

THE PERFECT: KIDS’ COLD WEATHER WEARS (with shopping tips)

The Perfect Kids' Cold Weather Wears (with lot's of shopping tips) After a few winter seasons, a few meaning many many (born and bred Canadians) I think we have the winter attire pretty much down. It took me a while, but like everything else (perfectionism at it’s best) I seemed to have developed a system, a list of our idea of the best items to buy, a plan to get the most out of every item and hopefully a way to make handing down to siblings possible. Our Idea of a Perfect Kids’ Cold Weather Winter Outfit:

1 . A Really Great Winter Coat – A few tips to keep in mind when shopping for your kids winter coat…

  • Go for a timeless, unisex style that is a little longer, like a parka – keep that butt warm even when they aren’t wearing snow pants (since they put their butts down anywhere, puddles included).
  • Choose a color that hides dirt well, will match everything they wear, and possibly be unisex – so handing down to a sibling or friend is always in the cards.
  • Buy it a full size too big (roll sleeves up if you need) – it will either fit perfect by the end of the winter, or be wearable for next year as well.
  • Make sure there is room to grow a little bit (also makes room for thick socks, if you so please), but not clod hopper big.
  • Get a really warm coat, down filled is always a great choice – it’s worth spending a bit more dough since they will wear it every day for like 5 months? (oh god, 5 whole MONTHS!?)
  • Good Unisex Options: Olive Parka or Navy Parka (25% off with code STYLETREAT)

2. Stock Up On Mittens – Mittens get lost faster than a blink of an eye, make sure you start the season with a few too many – you’ll probably end the season with one full pair (if you’re lucky).

  • Grab a bunch of cheapo mittens and gloves from the dollarstore or Target. These are great for back-ups, layering and wearing on crisp pre-winter or pre-spring days. Fun ‘fashion’ knit mitts also fall into my back-up category, great to have but not the best for everyday keeping warm, wear.
  • Get at least one good cold weather mitten, for those days they think they don’t need them – you know the kind.
  • We now go for one really great pair of winter snow mittens AND a pair of ski gloves, because they lose everything (obviously) and since they are a little older mittens are great but sometimes gloves are better.
  • Keep the color on the darker side, unless you don’t mind doing laundry allll the time.
  • Good Back-up Mittens:  fun knits and boys mitts and girls mitts – Really Good Cold (not freezing) Mittens: convertible solid colors  or faux sherpa or convertible prints – Some Good Freezing Weather Mittens: blue or pink or black winter mitts

3. Really REALLY Warm Winter Boots – As they get older they spend more time outdoors, out of the stroller (out of that warm stroller bubble) – so spending the extra coin on really good winter boots (like you would when shopping for yourself) is pretty important.

  • Go for a timeless unisex style – If they don’t wear it out, it would be pretty great to hand them down to a sibling/friend.
  • Neutral-ish colors, but not necessarily a must.  I tend to buy the kids neutral boots, so they pair effortlessly with any bottoms their little hearts desire.
  • Great Winter Boots: camel brown, black, light purple or navy and a great option if your winters are more wet and cold then freezing and icy: native boots

4. Hats, Hats and Even More Hats – You can never have enough!

  • Make sure you have hats to cover the gambit of winter weather, ear covering, fleece or fleece lined, lightweight, hey why not just go balaclava style.
  • The plus is, their head doesn’t grow as fast as their bodies, so hats will fit for a many seasons (after the baby stage) – and there will come a time when their hats also fit you!
  • Fun Hat Options: leopard, fur trapper hat, fairisle hat,

5. Skip The Scarf, Do The Snood – Okay, I’m lying a little. Like mittens and hats, it’s good to have at least 2 choices for neck wear.

  • A basic scarf, not too long is good for everyday use.
  • A comfy snood, is ideal for everyday keeps the neck warm and looks like a funky scarf so can be left on all day to beat the chill.
  • Great Snood: breathable and warm

6. Not In The Picture, But Oh So Important – Before you ask, cause I know you’re thinking it. Snow pants are number 6, part of the perfect winter wear – they just didn’t fit well into the picture, please forgive my perfectionism!

  • This is where you can get fun and funky, let them choose their favorite color or pattern. These usually don’t get worn as often (fingers crossed) and since everything else is neutral, it’s a great time to have at it.
  • Go for a thicker fabric, not a thinner satin style nylon – kids are rough, a hole or two in the knees or bum is inevitable when the fabric isn’t thick.
  • Since you bought a really great and maybe more expensive than you would have liked coat, it’s okay to get a more budget friendly pair of snow pants – these often don’t last past the season, and don’t get worn every-single-day like the coat.
  • Every Year I Buy These: ski pants

Do you have anything else to add?
