hoi bo bags If I had the money to spend on a designer bag, I would skip past all those other designers and head straight to a Canadian made Hoi Bo bag. Designer Sarra Tang, began by handcrafting every bag herself and still to this day makes sure that every bag has a handcrafted detail to it. Mostly leather bags that are vegetable tanned (with a few unique cotton canvas bags thrown in for good measure) the bags are made impeccably and in just the most beautiful minimalist style. Hoi Bo bags range from $100 – $750, but since the style sensibilities are so timeless and unisex it seems like a worthy investment. Personally these sit on my want list, but if you are a handbag junkie or a lover of fine goods – I would suggest you give this Canadian brand a spin.

ITEMS WE LOVE: the pleated satchel (top right), and the pleated purse. Once their online store is live, the items we love will be much longer.

You can shop their retail store in Toronto’s Distillery Distrct. Shop some of their popular items at Zane. Or sign up to be one of the first to hear when their e-store goes live.

bookhou Bookhou is a collaborative project between a form and function artist and an image and pattern artist. With the use of natural materials they hand make beautiful bags, pouches, and textiles  – sold online and in their brick and mortar store in Toronto. Their items are beautifully crafted, in the most memorable yet simplistic designs. A great little shop to buy yourself something nice, or maybe snatch something for a good friend on Christmas.

I have been meaning to do a post like this for a long time. One where I share the Canadian made brands and the indie shops that call Canada home. The ones I am proud so say are grown here, and usually can’t wait to tell people about in real life. There are a ton of brands that are well known to be Canadian; Lululemon, Roots, Canada Goose, Hudson’s Bay Company, Artizia, David’s Tea and a ton more. But I’m talking about the ones that maybe aren’t as well know, but totally should be. So this is my little humble Canadian approach to bragging about some of our amazing homegrown talent – because Oh Canada do we have a lot of great stuff up here.

The Drake General Store is a beautifully curated shop, they have two brick and mortar stores in Toronto, a pop up shop in The Bay’s flagship store and a fantastic online shop. From their in store displays to the items in the shops, everything is like a little slice of rustic Canada mixed with a sprinkle of urban edge. It is a fantastic place to find gifts (fr0m the handmade to well known), little items for your home, apothecary items for your cabinet and even Canadian themed attire for your person (or for your little person) – many items are Canadian made and others from around the globe. If you haven’t heard of The Drake General Store yet, you should most definitely add it to your list of favorites – it’s a little Canadian gem, if you ask me.
