SANDBOXES

3 Flares 3 Flares ×

These photos are from a few weeks back (I talked about weather enough this week, I’m sure it’s obvious) but when I saw them it made me think “winter = no more sandboxes…YES!”. I am like a two part Mom, half a one who let’s their kids go about and play, explore and learn all on their own, and half a Mom who is all “careful, ewwwwww….don’t touch that!” all the time. Here’s the thing with sandboxes, simply put I really hate them. They are fun and like really, how fun is it to dig in sand? But sandboxes, well they are the biggest germ cesspools and that is sorta saying a lot since parks themselves are germ pools. We (okay, I) actually have a no sandbox rule at most parks. There are very few parks where the sandbox gets a smile and a nod from me (beaches are usually a two thumbs up). Call me crazy, but having my kids play where dogs like to run and take a dump, new clean sand is basically never carried in and where hand foot and mouth disease is probably born – is not my idea of a fun time. So as much as I’m going to miss summer, this two part Mom will happily bid sandboxes (even though they are crazy cute, happy and content when playing in them) adieu.

Oh my goodness! I am the same way. I can’t help but view them as giant litter boxes for all kinds of "critters." The boys’ school added them to their playgrounds this year and all I could think was, "WHYYYYYYY???" Funny you mentioned hand, foot, and mouth – they’ve seen one of the worst outbreaks of it there this year. Hrrrmmmmm….. I just keep hoping that when it turns colder it will help kill off some of the germs…not that it will help the poop situation, but…well…alas. Sandboxes! Don’t guess you can really win, there. :S

I am a first time mom. Are you recommending a way to keep children away the sandbox? What was your trick?

Ha! No tips, it’s just a no and I tell them why – they know which parks have good sandboxes so ask to go there when they want to play in the sand.
