September 2013

the everyday moments, date with the kids, dad and daugther moments, city living EVERYDAY MOMENTS : 36/52 – when Dad is home, he is her personal ride/chauffeur.

Chris had Monday off, it was a super strange feeling being just three of us (while King was at school). Strange and nice, nice to watch him and Harley together – the way he looks at her when she does something cute (basically when she does anything). And so very nice to walk along side him and actually hold his hand, it sorta felt like we were on a date but with a little tiny chaperon.

I realized I don’t talk a lot about things, mostly about people – but things are pretty cool too. So I figured this would be a fun way to share some of those things that are so cool they sorta end up being my favorite. This list is sorta like my tried, tested and true, real life favorite list. I know I, like to hear about the things people actually really love and use, so this will be that from me. Here are just a few of my favorite things, surely more real life lists like this will follow in time. power y tank, the best workout tank rise kombucha, mint kombucha nail polish, grey nail polish honey throat drops, ener c the best leggings, aritiza leggings the best pepper, simply organic pepper the best boyfriend jeans, H&M boyfriend jeans

  1. POWER Y TANK – literally the best workout/yoga tank in history, I wish they made an everyday version out of cotton with the same racerback cut.
  2. MINT KOMBUCHA – even a kombucha hater would love this stuff, it’s tremendously delicious (over the top, but it’s true). It’s my afternoon pick me up, instead of a second coffee – I have been lucky enough to find 1L bottles on the cheap!
  3. NAIL POLISH – this color is like a dark grey/purple (grey area), it’s the cheap stuff or more like the not 11$ a bottle stuff. I haven’t painted my nails since pre kiddos, but now that Harley is all about getting hers done it’s a must I do mine too – though she doesn’t quite understand why pink isn’t really my favorite.
  4. HONEY THROAT LOZENGES – these things are amazing, it’s nice to have something to suck one when you have a sore throat and the honey actually works amazing to heal the soreness. I was sick and used up the whole box, but I initially bought them for the kiddos. Also Ener-C, I’m never quite smart enough to take it BEFORE getting sick but I assume it helps me to get better faster.
  5. THE BEST LEGGINGS – no joke, no exaggeration. They have a thick waistband, with a tiny elastic sewn in similar to Lulu pants – no muffin top guarantee. Also they are made with little tacks on the legs, so you can chop them to suit the length you want no going to a seamstress. These babies are the bees knees as far as everyday leggings go (not really suitable for workouts or yoga).
  6. PEPPER – actually all spices from Simply Organic are the best in the west. But the pepper gets two thumbs up, it’s not chunky like pepper mill pepper (which I’m not really a fan of) and it’s not super fine like regular pepper – it’s right in the middle and juusst right.
  7. BOYFRIEND JEANS – the best boyfriend jeans that have ever graced my butt. Not too baggy, not too loose, tapered in the leg and dropped in the crotch just enough. I have said it before, but H&M jeans really are the best (I should also mention I’m a bit of a denim snob, so devoting my love to cheap jeans is saying a lot) – and these BF jeans are on that best list.

Instead of a post filled with photos of food we like a whole lot. I am stuck on one delicious salad, we often go to whole foods just to devour it and then my cousin made it in the summertime – and then I literally dreamnt of it for weeks. Eventually I decided to make it myself with some tweaks. Oh and I added kelp noodles, my friend told me all about these super noodles and I finally bought them. Cheese Whiz, the only thing that is stupid about them is how long it took me to buy them. They are great in everything, add an extra crunch and are so crazy healthy and cleansing (no more detail then that needed, this is a post about food). So keep in mind, I am not a food blogger or a recipe maker (nor do I claim or aspire to be) – I just simply like to share the things we love and sometimes food fits into that love list. broccoli crunch salad, kelp noodles in salad, what we eat, salad love, broccoli cranberry salad

BROCCOLI SALAD WITH EXTRA CRUNCH

  • 2 broccoli crowns (or 3)
  • 1/4 red onion
  • handful of sunflower seeds
  • handful of dried cranberries
  • cooked chopped bacon or tempeh bacon or coconut bacon (optional)
  • 1 heaping table spoon veganaise (no soy version)
  • 1/2 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons cane sugar
  • salt
  • pepper
  • kelp noodles
  1. whisk together: veganaise, apple cider vinegar, cane sugar, salt and pepper.
  2. wash and cut broccoli into small bit sized pieces, toss with sunflower seeds, red onion, dried cranberries and bacon (or facon bacon).
  3. pour dressing over top and mix. cover and put in fridge for 30 mins, or so.
  4. before eating mix a handful of (washed and cut) kelp noodles with each serving.

SO KELP NOODLES, HEY? You can buy them at specialty food or health food stores. They aren’t really like noodles at all, more like a crunchy sorta tasteless vegetable in a noodle shape – which means they taste good in everything, since they don’t over power any flavors. They are gluten free, contain no fat, cholesterol, protein, or sugar – and are usually just 10 calories per serving,  basically they add some extra substance without all the carbs and such. They are super high in nutrients, because kelp is super like that. So far I have tried them in salads, but I am excited to test them out as noodles in some pasta, maybe even soup and I’m sure they would be great in fresh spring rolls. I might not have sold them as well as I should, so just trust me and give them a try. Also this salad, but be careful you might just eat the whole thing.

How may times do you need to go to the zoo before you stop taking pictures? I’ll let you know when we get there. We go to the Toronto Zoo pretty often, and have been a lot (before kiddos too) it’s a pretty darn fantastic zoo. Lately, my eyes are just fixated on my people, listening to their questions, giggles and excitement – sometimes I totally miss the White Lion (I saw it’s butt) because I was watching the more entertaining things. Since my eyes are fixated on my people and those moments, my zoo pictures are too – so I will probably never tire of taking pictures at the zoo.

Chris is back in proper work hours, thank goodness! We missed him, and since it was King’s birthday last week we told him come Sunday he could pick the activities and food for the entire day – the day was his. The zoo was a grand pick, we had a great time and I even got to see a Panda Bear! Hear that mom? A panda! When I was growing up I was a wee bit obsessed with Panda’s but our city zoo never had them, and I always dreamed of seeing one in real life. Well a decade (or two), a couple of kids and moving across the country later – I saw a Panda! I’m sure I had a goofy doe eyed look the whole time, I would totally share but everyone else was fixated on the beautiful bear and not my questions, giggles and excitement.

The kidlets were asked if they wanted to take part in Mini Mioche’s Fall 2013 shoot, I let them decide and they pretty much jumped all over the idea. They asked everyday leading up if today was the day and they both talk about when we can do it all again, on repeat. Mini Mioche is my longest and most loyal of sponsors, they are a home grown Toronto talent. Fully designed and made here, plus all their goods are 100% Organic. Everything we have owned from them literally lasts forever (meaning each item still pretty much looks like new when they have out grown it, forever is just an easier way of saying all that) and then we hand it down and it lasts someone else forever. They are my go to for shoes, the shoe collection is always perfectly curated and my kids just really REALLY love visiting their stores (they call it “eeny meeny micohe” I don’t know why). You have probably heard me talk about them a lot (here, twitter, IG, everywhere) it’s all for very good honest reasons, I am just lucky enough to work with a company that I enjoy so much and totally believe in. Okay, back to the Fall shoot because the cuteness cannot be held back anymore – these are just a few of my favorites from the day. mini mioche, made in canada kids clothing, the drake general store, fall clothes for kids, quality kids basics, stylish kids basics mini mioche, made in canada kids clothing, the drake general store, fall clothes for kids, quality kids basics, stylish kids basics mini mioche, made in canada kids clothing, the drake general store, fall clothes for kids, quality kids basics, stylish kids basics mini mioche, made in canada kids clothing, the drake general store, fall clothes for kids, quality kids basics, stylish kids basics mini mioche, made in canada kids clothing, the drake general store, fall clothes for kids, quality kids basics, stylish kids basics mini mioche, made in canada kids clothing, the drake general store, fall clothes for kids, quality kids basics, stylish kids basics mini mioche, made in canada kids clothing, the drake general store, fall clothes for kids, quality kids basics, stylish kids basics mini mioche, made in canada kids clothing, the drake general store, fall clothes for kids, quality kids basics, stylish kids basics mini mioche, made in canada kids clothing, the drake general store, fall clothes for kids, quality kids basics, stylish kids basics All Mini Mioche Fall items are starting to flow into the shops, and I hear more is to come – I am waiting out a few of the fleece items (that black hoodie and toggle jacket being two). And they have many more images to share (I just selfishly chose mosty images of my kids) lot’s of crazy cute babies and kiddos is cute attire – I think I said awww an annoying amount that day but I literally couldn’t help myself. Also before I sign off, MM did a limited edition collab with another awesome local talent Drake General Store called BEST KID – it is adorable and something you must check out before it’s all gone because I promise it’s that awesome it’ll go fast.

He’s five, a whole flipping hand old. Last night I looked at him and couldn’t believe that 5 amazing years have flew by so quickly. I have loved every single lovely and rough moment (looking back I always love even those moments we struggled) of his 5 years of life so much. And I am (bitter-sweetly) excited to see the big boy he’s going to become and even the young adult (probably in a blink of an eye) he will grow into. I am so proud of him everyday and love being with him, I love him because he is the best son I could ever dream of and simply he is one of the best people I have ever met in my life. I could spew on for days about what a fantastic little human he is, and I’m sure you would believe me. Half a decade with you my little King, I am beyond grateful to get to spend my days as your Mommy. Happy Birthday my dream boy!

Rainbow pancakes, loads of balloons in the morning and the same birthday crown every year, are just a few of our Birthday traditions. Simple but things I hold super dear and hope the kids will too.

And then came all the thoughts about time and how sweet and also what a b*tch she can be. I have been a Mom for 5 years, that alone is a crazy mind game. One of the most important days in my history, the day this boy made me a Mother. A day that feels like it happened only last year, actually happened 5 whole years ago! Then I looked around, looked down at my PJs they were leggings I bought just before I got pregnant with him and then continued to wear through both pregnancies – and now have migrated into my PJ drawer. I always just thought of them as being “my old leggings” that were maybe a year or so old – wrong. Most of my thoughts and memories feel like that, like it happened just the other week – but time is tricky like that or at least she’s always playing those tricks on me.

The other day someone called me a women, and I looked behind me. Me a woman? I still feel like a teenager, a teen Mom I guess – even though I know I’m not.  It’s weird and hard to explain, like somehow someone got my age wrong but also got it right. Time seems to be funny like that, as soon as life seems to get really really good (like when the kids started arriving) time just decided to put the pedal to the metal and totally screw with me. And then I wonder, is this how my Mom felt with me and my siblings growing up? Is this how you all feel? Time flies, but it also often feels like it’s standing still and then I get hit in the face (like today) with the fact that it has actually flown. I don’t know, today my mind is a rambling.

CARDIGAN: c/o American Apparel – TANK: c/o American Apparel – JEANS: H&M – BOOTS: Joe Fresh (past spring) similar and similarish

Without even knowing it, Harlow put on one of the greatest outfits she had ever worn. Her feet were fast like a cheetahs and her cardigan, when she ran flew like a cape. Who knew wearing clothes that were crazy adorable (and awesome gifts, might I add) could be even more fun to wear. She since wants to wear both items pretty much daily and who could blame her? Like really. This cardigan is like the skirt version of the twirly skirt. The only thing is it flows out behind her like a cape and watching it while running is a tad tricky (teeth clenching smile for me). If your little it looking for the super hero cape that goes with everything, this here is the one.*that sassy top photo is my favorite (even though a tad blurry). She was teasing her brother but forgot I was right beside him, with a camera – siblings, the best.

I want them to choose their own favorite colors, cartoon character or even favorite clothing items, you get the drift. They still could really careless about what clothing they wear and are always ecstatic about what is laid out, I’m sure it’s probably just for now. I have to be totally honest though, I am really not a fan of the whole Disney princess thing (or barbies for that matter) for many reasons I won’t go into. But mostly because I myself am a tom boy and don’t full understand the allure. I know I know I probably (and did) like them when I was a kid, which is why even though I’m not a fan I try not to influence. If Harlow decides she’s a princess and only wants princessy stuff, then I will do it all with a smile on my face – because anything that makes her smile also makes me smile.

Recently she came up with this list, her “5 favorite girls” with no help from me might I add. 1.Princess Leia 2.Ariel 3.Fiona (from Shrek) 4.Mommy 5.Lakey Peterson (pro surfer).

Her list just put a huge smile on my face, because it’s close to a list I probably would have made as a little girl who had a bff brother too (but also, I would smile at any list she would have come up with because it would have come from her) . With no extra influence from me and probably a lot of natural influence from her brother – she’s a well rounded pink princessey, tom girl, tough girl (as she likes to call her self).

*What you thought those teeny tiny toddler sized bunny slippers were for Harlow?
