Sing and Dance

just dance, dancing kids

Before ever having kids I remember this conversation I had with my talented singing, dancing and acting friend Ashleigh; I don’t remember the whole thing but it basically ended with me saying: ‘I will not be one of those mom’s singing and dancing in public, making up songs for every little thing’.  Not because I thought it would be embarrassing (well I think I thought it would be embarrassing for my future children), but because I stiiinnnnk as a singer: toooonee deaaaafff (sung in a high pitched tone deaf tone). Dancing I can totally do, but for some reason I thought I wouldn’t be doing either. Oh, ALL the silly things we assume we would NEVER do pre kids, then we of course end up doing them – I am a singing and dancing fool, hence my kids are little singing and dancing fools. I still stink at singing, STINK at singing but whatever – singing classics like: “eat your supper”, “clean up”, or “keep trying” (usually a mix of Barney, Yo Gabba Gabba, The Backyardigans or made up on the spot hits) work much better then just asking or telling the kids what to do with boring old words. Add a little dance in add a little tune to it, and they are putty in my tone deaf dancing hands.

This is too funny- totally the story of my life! But I do find that making up little songs for everything makes them laugh and forces me not to take myself too seriously all the time!

I agree! Totally how I felt. Now I make up songs for EVERYTHING. Like you my gifts are not in singing but oh well! It makes Atticus smile and that is worth any embarrassment.
