Small Style Icon

I think Small Style Icon is by far one of my favourite posts, I love getting to know all the cute kids a little bit more. And I always learn so much from their stylish mama’s. This week’s Small Style Icon is the adorable Doe eyed Marlowe from ohdeardrea. Marlowe already has a fantastic boho, hippie style and she’s only One. Her mom, Drea is the hilarious, crafty, vegan wonder behind ohdeardrea. This beautiful duo has such a refreshing and natural take on life, and style, I knew they would be the perfect pair to give us a few tips on how to dress like a Small Style Icon {and boy was I right!}…

Dress:from Ecuador…Headband:Up a Tree Cup a TeaShoes:Tiny Toms

What are your favourite stores or brands you and Marlowe like to shop at?

Our whole goal in outfit purchasing is being as eco-friendly as possible. Most of Marlowe’s outfits are either second hand or thrifted. She’s got a closet full of name-brand baby items and one of a kind adorable vintage dresses, by thrifting.  It saves money and it’s less work on the environment— without as much demand, there is less to supply. The items that are not second hand are preferably either: handmade, organic, or extremely high quality brands- these items last longer through baby-wear and can be kept for many many years. Clothes that are well made last longer and can be passed on to other kiddos (and/or hopefully future little brothers or sisters). We also enjoy when friends and family bring us items from other countries. They are almost always made well… and always one of a kind 🙂

Brands we love:

  • Barley & Birch— always organic, water based inks, and extremely eco-friendly.
  • Hanna Anderson— we love all Swedish clothing. Most Swedish clothes are designed and made in Sweden and made incredibly well out of extremely durable material— not to mention bright, and adorable!
  • KappAhl: another bright and fun Swedish brand.
  • Starbugaloo: The cutest handmade dresses and smocks. Extremely well made, out of re-purposed material. Many of the dresses are either reversible and great for the hot Florida heat- or for layering for the winter months.
  • Up a Tree Cup a Tea: Cutest baby headbands and bows! Also made from re-purposed material.
  • Also, for layering basics or pj’s we find a lot of pretty durable and/or reversible items from Baby Gap.

Do you have any tips for putting a little outfit together for other Mom’s who are wanting to dress their little one like a style icon?

Stick with Basics. Babies don’t have to look like babies with cutesy little prints all the time. Dress them how you would dress yourself, except maybe with more consideration to the comfort and snuggly level. Keep it simple, sometimes less is more, a ridiculous oversized bow the size of your babies head just looks like…. well a ridiculous bow. People will see your baby and how cute they are without the excessive flare.

Does Marlowe’s style mirror your own?

Marlowe’s little style is very much like my own… except maybe with more dresses, leggings, and brighter colors. I wish I could wear half the rompers she owns without looking ridiculous. Also, Marlowe is almost always in stripes, solids, or florals, just like me. And a tee or a tank, tucked into a skirt.

Romper:Hanna AndersonHeadband:Up a Tree Cup a TeaShoes:Tiny Toms

What are your FAV 3 pieces in Marlowe’s closet that get the most wear/use?

Our three favorite pieces: (in the Florida summer and fall heat) a light fabric dress, a basic tee (preferbly Barley and Birch’s Garlic tee, cause who doesn’t love garlic?) and a good knit sweater to carry everywhere for the chilly AC. (in the Florida winter) Take out the dress and add a good pair of stripped leggings.

Thank you so much Andrea and Marlowe!  Such fantastic tips and Marlowe; what a doll!

xoxo

Small Style Icon this week features one of our most popular Mini Street Styler’s, the stylish and cute; Tessa {you can see her in MSS here, here and here}. Her fantastic curly blonde hair, her pretty hipster style, and her overall adorableness have made her a Mini Street Style all star. So it only made sense to ask beautiful Tessa and her mom Michelle {who also happens to be an old friend of mine} if they would give us a few tips on how to dress like a Small Style Icon…

Shirt: Zara…Skirt: Old Navy…Shoes: Zara…Bracelet: her mom’s from aerie

What are your favourite stores or brands you like to shop at, for Tessa?

Zara is probably my favourite stores to shop at but I always check out H&M, Old Navy and The Gap as well.  I love Crewcuts and AE77 for online shopping.  I mostly stick to the same stores/brands so I know the fit and quality will be good.  Tessa wears a lot of denim and on a whim I found a sale and got the best pair of jeans at All Saints.  Typically though most of her denim is from The Gap.  For special or unique items I like to check out the local boutiques or Etsy.

Do you have any tips for putting a little outfit together for other Mom’s who are wanting to dress their little one like a small icon?

Accessorize, with necklaces, bracelets, scarfs, hair clips, etc.  Pay attention to trends, trendy items can be fun if they suit your (child’s) style.  Fashion blogs and Pinterest are great places to get inspired.  Try things on,  sometimes clothing looks cute on the hanger but completely ridiculous on.  The last fun little tip i love to do with my kids (i have a nine month old girl too) is coordinate our outfits, sometimes it happens by accident, but it’s a great way for me to be creative when we are getting ready.

 Tunic: Zara…Shorts: 77kids {hidden a bit under the tunic}…Sandals: Zara…Scarf: Crewcuts…Bracelets: Crewcuts and Groove Stone.

Does Tessa’s style mirror your own or is her personalty beginning to shine thru? Does she ever pick out her own clothes?

Tessa’s style definitely reflects mine.  I always ask “would i wear this” when I shop for her and I am completely jealous of her ever changing wardrobe… those pesky growth spurts. 😉  Some days she has a huge say in what she wears and others I pick everything.  Typically she will choose one item, the shoes or shirt (if she had it her way she would never wear bottoms).  It’s super fun to watch her develop her own opinions on what she wears… pink shirts are her favourite thing and sometimes the only thing she will wear right now! 🙂

Tunic: Zara…Jeans: The Gap…Shoes: Zara…Hairbow: Mom’s from H&M.

What are your {or Tessa’s} FAV 3 pieces that get the most wear/use?

A pair of good skinny jeans, a basic white tank, and a necklace or a bracelet… Tessa is obsessed with jewellery.

PS. Little Tessa and Little Lila also happen to be best buddies. Too much style and cuteness!!

Thank you so much Michelle and Tessa!!

So you know how on Friday I said I was a bit bummed cause we weren’t going to be going to any TIFF showings this year, and the only movie I really wanted to see was Drive? Well my husband surpirsed me by getting off work super early with tickets to the Drive Premier! Super stoked to spend some {he’s been working is booty off} time with him, see Ryan Gosling in person {watch the circus of women and men screaming when they saw him} and the movie…was fantastic!

I think we have done three Small Style Icon‘s so far? And not one of them has been a boy! Well this week we have our very first stylish little guy! Wolfie was born to be a style icon, his name alone paved the way but that head of hair? He could wear PJ’s and still be more stylish then the rest of us! Wolfie’s mom, Alix is one half of the super vintage duo over at Modern Kiddo, one of our very favourite blogs {you have probably seen us cheerleading for them before}, she is also one of my fav ladies in blogosphere. Alix is a vintage lover to the max {obviously}, but she also has an amazing flair for whats hip now.

Alix and Wolfie really are the perfect pair to bring us a few tips on how to be a Small Style Icon!

Alot of Wolfie’s style is vintage,  so unfortunately we don’t have a lot of links to share….But you can easily replicate his awesome look with the tips Alix shares…

What are your favourite stores or brands you like to shop at, for Wolfie?

Oh jeez that’s a hard one! Well, of course I love vintage pieces on him (cool plaid western shirts, stripey tees, fun 70s jackets etc) BUT of course we also wear lots of modern brands. Faves include: Polarn O. Pyret for soft shirts,  Mini Boden for cute swim gear, Zara Kids for great, stylish tops and H&M for their awesome jeans. OH! And we LOVE Threadless Kids—you can scoop up rad tees for $6 when they have sales!

I also want to say that I am a big believer in not blowing the bank on kiddo clothing. While I love spendier brands, we get a TON of mileage out of Target. If you poke around, their toddler clothes are extremely cute (Small Paul! Dwell Kids!) and now that he is in the “big boys” section, we love Shaun White for hoodies and tees and Target’s Levi’s skinny jeans are the bomb!

Do you have any tips for putting a little outfit together for other Mom’s who are wanting to dress their little one like a small icon?

I think dressing boys can be a big challenge. There simply isn’t as much out there as there is for little girls, and I think it’s easy to simply give up and say “Well, boys are rough and tumble and they don’t care.” Not true! My biggest tip for making little guys look great is COLOR. Don’t be afraid of bright reds and kermit greens and even purples. Start ‘em young and nurture an appreciation for a colorful life! I try to steer clear of earth tones, cream, and the darker “boy colors” (beige/navy/maroon). I also look for fun graphic tees—a great way to be funky but not fussy.

If you are budget conscious, don’t fret. I have found cool stuff everywhere. You just need to keep your eyes open! Get basic straight leg blue jeans from a more affordable brand and splurge on cute colorful tees or a funky/cool jacket. We love Vans and Converse sneakers—Vans are especially comfortable and have a great skater look.

When kiddos are younger, accessories like hats and suspenders can be really fun. I would like to say, however, that mama’s DO need to be flexible as their boys get older! As adorable as suspenders look, you wouldn’t want to send your lad to preschool or elementary school in something as complicated as suspenders (potty time can be tricky!). Also, once Wolfie hit elementary school we had other challenges. He would be painting and drawing and playing on the playground—I didn’t want his “nicer” clothes to get mussed. Also, let’s be fair. When all your buddies are wearing Bakugon and Superhero tees….do you want to send your kid to school in stripey vintage mod pants?? If he’s especially confident, sure. But at a young age, kid’s are still finding their way. I didn’t want to impose my style on him. So we compromised. I would find character tees that I thought were cute (and didn’t have violent imagery on them) and pair them with things that I thought were a little more funky. Another tip, I usually pick out two or three shirts and then let wolfie choose the one he wants to wear. I still maintain my mama style control, but he gets to still have a say. I know once he gets older this will all change and I’ll have to totally relinquish control, but I’m holdin’ on while I can!

Does Wolfie’s style mirror your own or is his personalty beginning to shine thru? Does he ever pick out her own clothes?

I can’t lie, I have really shaped and formed Wolfie’s style from the get go. Things that I thought were cute or cool are what I have always bought for him. And I have a strong opinion on colors and patterns…but interestingly enough somewhere along the way, the style I picked out for him became “his” style. Wolfie’s look has always been colorful, a touch quirky and has a little bit of an indie/rocker style. It’s what he feels comfy in and what he looks best in. Ooh that raises a good point. We have a “comfy” rule and even if something is amazing and cool and I loooove it, if it’s uncomfortable for him, we pull it out of rotation. He had the best little sweater I got on sale but the wool was scratchy and he complained about the neckline etc etc. So, as much as it broke my heart, we donated it. I want him to look stylish but I never want him to feel uncomfortable. He picked this outfit out:

What are your {or Wolfie’s} FAV 3 pieces that get the most wear/use?

  1. Cardigans are a new discovery we made this year. San Francisco has fickle weather—foggy cool in the morning and then nice and sunny by evening. Cardies are a great way to stay cozy in the morning but he can easily take it off come afternoon. American Apparel makes great light weight cardigans (unisex), but we also have two really stylishly soft ones we got on GILT from Kiko Kids.
  2.  His vintage plaid button shirts. We wear them over a white tee. I love that they look casual-but-kinda-dressed-up
  3. I would def say his skinny jeans are a top fave. He wears them pretty much every day! This year he picked out a pair of those new wave skinnies in turquoise and a pair in purple (!!). I was a tad nervous someone at his school would says something about the purple because they ARE a bit of a statement. When he got home I casually asked him how his purple pants were at school (under the guise of, “Could you play kick ball ok in them?”) He told me, “Yeah. Morris asked me if they were GIRL jeans though.” EEK! My worst nightmare. I tried to be casual, “Oh…so um, what did you say?” “Well DUH. I’m a BOY, of course they are boy jeans!” “Oh, well that was a great answer.” I said. “Do you still want to wear them?” “Uh huh. They’re cool!”  I played it cool myself, not wanting to make a big deal about it, but inside I was bustin’ with pride. And Morris never made another comment. I was so proud of his confidence and standing his ground.

So that’s it! Thank you so much for asking me to share Wolfie’s style with you Brandy! We heart Baby Blackbird!!

Small Style Icon this week features super stylish and ridiculously photogenic little Lila. Lila is the star of the fantastic photo blog Lila Was Here, one of my favourite daily reads. Lila’s mom Andrea is one of my good friends best buds {sorta a tongue twister}, otherwise I would not have had the pleasure of ‘meeting’ her. Andrea knows style, she is an amazing photographer, the talent behind Pink Sugar Photography, I’m sure you have seen her work all over pinterest! If you live in Western Canada Pink Sugar is the photographer you should be calling {I hope we can book a session with her one day!}, by far one of our fav photographers! Lila has such great style, I mean she dresses better then most adults, and she’s super cute to boot!

So naturally, Lila and Andrea are the perfect pair to inspire and give us a few tips on how to dress a Small Style Icon!

Cardigan: Crewcuts…Tank Top: The Gap…Skirt: Crewcuts…Socks: Crewcuts…Boots: Hunter…Donkey: Jellycat

What are your favourite stores or brands you like to shop at, for Lila?

i shop quite frequently, and at a lot of stores and online shops, but the majority of lila’s wardrobe staples, and my favourite pieces, come from either zara or crewcuts. the quality is great, the fit typically works for my slim girl, and i love that most of the clothes are things i would wear myself if they came in my size! the fact that we have a zara here in edmonton, and that j. crew offers free shipping to canada on their kids’ stuff helps too 😉

Shirt: H&M…Shorts: Zara…Scarf: Zara…Sandals: Zara…Necklace: Made by talented mom

Do you have any tips for putting a little outfit together for other Mom’s who are wanting to dress their little one like a small icon?

layer and accessorize! adding a vest or scarf or necklace adds visual interest and can totally make an outfit. throw on suspenders with a tank and skirt; add a flowered pin to a simple t-shirt; throw on a floppy hat and sunglasses with a swimsuit; the options are endless 🙂

Does Lila’s style mirror your own or is her personalty beginning to shine thru? Does she ever pick out her own clothes?

in the last few months we’ve been transitioning into joint decisions on clothing choices, so i’d say a little of both. she almost always chooses her own shoes, and now that the weather is finally nice here, i usually ask if she’d prefer a dress or a skirt or shorts and then we pick out some pieces from there. i think if it were up to her, she’d wear something either floral or striped everyday!
or perhaps she’d wear a tutu… this look was 100% lila….

What are your {or Lila’s} FAV 3 pieces that get the most wear/use?

for everyday playing and running around: tiny toms, crewcuts slub cotton cardi, and 77kids boyfit undies (seriously, if you have a toddler daughter, you need to try these! comfort, coverage and thick high quality cotton).

Jacket: Crewcuts…Scarf: Zara…Shirt: Zara…Jeans: Noppies…Boots: The Gap

Thank you so much Lila and Andrea!!

Amazing photo’s and SUPER stylish little girl right?  Make sure to check out Lila Was Here and Pink Sugar Photography!

xoxo

I would suggest would be to pick out a few seasonal Key Pieces for your little one. Make sure they are on trend, then just mix & match those pieces!

Does Kenzie’s style mirror your own or is her personalty beginning to shine thru? Does she ever pick out her own clothes?

Kenzie’s style does mirror my own a bit, but she does have a say in her outfits. She is quite the little stylish one! She will tell me what she wants to wear and will put things together things that I would never think about putting together. They are really cute too! She picked out this outfit below!

Small Style Icon, features those little ones that leave the rest of us Mom’s in utter shock at how stylish a little person can be!

Our Small Style Icon this week is truly an Icon, Penelope aka Pippi, from Pippi Parade! She is a natural little fashion plate, and the star of Pippi Parade a fashionable blog all about Penelope’s many outfits. Pippi’s mom, Heather is a super sweet lady who owns one of my favourite little vintage shops for kids; 3 Ring Circus. Heather is also a talented stylist {Pippi’s outfits are a prime example}, so she is the perfect Mama to give us a few tips!

Dress: Misha Lulu…T-Shirt: Target…Leggings: Target {baby dept}…Boots: Hand me downs

What are your favourite stores or brands you like to shop at for Pippi?

Misha Lulu and Acoustic Clothing for brands, they have a vintage retro feel to them. Places to shop; thrift stores and etsy for handmade or vintage. Target and H&M for the basics. Zara and crewcuts at the mall.
75% of our wardrobe is hand me downs and thrift stores finds. We shop for basics at Target and H&M because they are affordable and can be mixed well with the hand me-downs and vintage. If we make our way to the mall or a department store we head straight to the sale racks because normally you can find the odd colors or wacky prints that most people pass over and they are at a better price.

We also do some online shopping at the mini social. As much as we love designer/boutique clothing, kids just grow so quickly. By wearing hand me downs and recycled finds outfits become much more interesting.

Do you have any tips for putting a little outfit together for other Mom’s who are wanting to dress their little one like a small icon?

Dressing kids should be fun! The most important thing for Penelope when picking clothing, is that it has to be comfortable. Leggings are always a great choice to wear under dresses. Sometimes we shop for leggings in the baby department to use at shorts or capris. Mixing vintage finds, like an 80’s dress, with some modern skinny jeans, and a pair of toms updates the look. Vintage or hand made sweaters are always a must, they can make a target dress look a little more unique. Since we get a lot of hand me downs, they may not always be for the right seasons so we may layer long sleeve tees under tank style dresses/tops and add some tights or knee socks. Each season we can splurge on a few designer pieces knowing that we will mix it with thrift or hand me downs.

Does Pippi’s style mirror your own or is her personalty beginning to shine thru? Does she ever pick out her own clothes?

I would say that Penelope and I have similar styles in the sense that we both wear vintage mixed with basics. But she definitely has her own style. She is much brighter and more daring with mixing prints than I am. She has a say in what she wears and picks it out most days.

What are your {or Pippi’s} FAV 3 pieces that get the most wear/use?

Three pieces that get the most use would be our courtneycourtney custom dress that was made from daddy’s rock tees (it’s cozy) .
Grey skinny jeans which can be worn with her dresses or a tee for school.
A vintage peasant dress that was mamas and has been worn as a dress and now fits as a tunic top.

Dress: Thrifted {vintage 1980′s}…Bloomers: Handme downs {baby pants}…Sandals: Miss Trish from Target

Pippi has also been a Weekly Kiddo over at Modern Kiddo, click on over there and have a look see at more fab facts about Pippi!

Thank you, thank you Heather and Penelope. Such great advice and tips, and THANK YOU for letting me name Pippi a Small Style Icon!

xoxo

PS. If there is anything you’d like to know from the Mom’s of these stylish kidlets, that we may have missed. Let us know in the comments and we can add it to the next post. 🙂

Brand spanking, new feature! SO excited about this one {even more then usual}, I’ve been working on this one for a while and SO excited to introduce it to you finally!

It’s called Small Style Icon, and basically we will be featuring those little ones that leave the rest of us Mom’s swooning and in utter shock at how stylish that little person is! You know the ones, where your thinking: “I WISH I had that wardrobe in my size!”. I was hugely inspired by the Mama Style posts over at Bleubird and Harpers Happenings {two of  my fav blogs}, so really wanted to incorporate a Q & A portion, from the Mom’s of these Small Style Icons. Having insight and tips from other Mom’s to stylish little ones, will be a very valuable point of view on Baby Blackbird. And something totally new, so very exciting!

Without further ado, here is our very first Small Style Icon post…

It’s only fitting that our very first Small Style Icon be little miss Harper from Harpers Happenings. It was her mama’s creative feature {Mama Style} helped inspire me, and little miss Harper is truly a little icon {you will see why below}. She is the small half of every styling Steppin’ out Saturday post {another excellent feature of Mandy’s}. Harpers Happenings is a must read, not only because it features stylish cutie pie, Harper but her Mom Mandy is definitely one of the sweetest, and loveable bloggers around. Also be sure to check out Harper’s Mams’s shop Opal Vintage, lots of cute vintage duds for you and your little!

Harper is an uber cutie with awesome style, I can’t wait for Mandy to tell you more…

Dress:Old Navy….Shoes:Thrifted{Arizona Company}

What are your favourite stores or brands you like to shop at for Harper?

The places I shop the most for Harper are most definitely Target and second hand stores. I know it doesn’t sound very glamorous! But I really love Target’s prices and the one near me always has a lot to choose from in really cute styles. And I love love love consignment shops – the littles grow so quickly, it’s hard sometimes to justify spending a lot of money on clothes when they may only wear something one or two times. I’m slightly obsessed with vintage for kiddos so thrifting special pieces is huge. I also love H & M and Old Navy for adorable finds at really great prices.

Do you have any tips for putting a little outfit together for other Mom’s who are wanting to dress their little one like a small icon?

What I really love is putting things together that may not “go”. I know a lot of things come with matching leggings or skirts, but I like mixing patterns like stripes and polkadots, and putting colors together that maybe aren’t a first thought. This way, your kiddo looks unique and cute and besides, at their age they can pull off anything!

Does Harper’s style mirror your own or is her personalty beginning to shine thru? Does she ever pick out her own clothes?

Harper is just hitting the age where she has big opinions on what she wants to wear! Personally I always love what she picks out because I love seeing what she comes up with 🙂

What are your {or Harper’s} FAV 3 pieces that get the most wear/use?

She has a pair of those green frog boots that she is pretty obsessed with. Living in Washington state, we have gotten a lot of wear out of those bad boys! Also a pair of grayish black skinny jeans from Nordstrom are a staple. They look cute with any top and shoe and are kind of stretchy so they are comfortable for her. Her pink converse are also a main event around here. They make any outfit cute!

Thank you, thank you Mandy and Harper. Great advice and tips, and THANK YOU for letting me name Harper the first Small Style Icon!

xoxo

PS. If there is anything you’d like to know from the Mom’s of these stylish kidlets, that we may have missed. Let us know in the comments and we can add it to the next post. 🙂
